Keeping safe: Castles

Castles may seem romantic to our modern eyes, but they were not built to be tourist destinations!

The idea of a castle is to make a city, a manor, a kingdom, or a country safe from invaders.

1. The castle is a fortified place where people are property are protected by thick, stone walls, narrow slit windows where archers can rain arrows on people trying to get it. It is often surrounded by water (a moat) and a cleared space where the enemy can't hide in the trees.

2. The castle is a symbol of power, wealth, and unassailability. Its size, strength, and armaments intimidate those who might seek to take over the area the castle protects.

Medieval Europe was the birthplace of the iconic castle (high, heavy stone walls; massive wooden doors; parapets and watchtowers), but castles can be found in many parts of the world.
