Is it a fort? an island? a trail? a park? or a beach?

The Gulf Coast of Florida is in many ways defined by its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. A vast body of water that borders , about 50% of the Gulf is shallow, just above your knees; however, the Sigsbee Deep goes down 12,000-14,000 feet (2-3 miles). Five states border the Gulf: Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Lousiana, and Florida.

Birds all in a row
We visited the Gulf Coast of Florida and traveled north and south without seeing a Gulf beach. Why? Because north of the beautiful beaches of the Tampa Bay area, the coats turns marshy. More than 60 rivers empty into the Gulf, either directly, in a complicated path through barrier islands, or twisting through swamps.

In the area we visited, seven rivers empty into the Gulf, all of them winding through marshes. To get to a beach, we had to drive seven miles to reach Fort Island Trail Park.
