Meaning-making
Does a poet write a particular meaning into a poem, or are poems simply words arranged in a artful way?
Some will say that poets make meaning by how they use their tools: word choice, meter, rhyme, metaphor, image, simile, shape, and so on.
Others say the reader makes the meaning, based on personal life experiences and interpretations.
Here's a bit of poetry by Czeslaw Milosz, from The Separate Notebooks.
“The bright side of the planet moves toward darkness
and the cities are falling asleep, each in its own hour,
and for me, now as then, it is too much.
There is too much world.”
What does the poet mean by "too much world"? What do those words mean to you?
