Greenland from the airplane

Coming back from Oslo, my plane flew over southern Greenland. It was amazing to think of a place that was a symbol of isolation for centuries was right there, out the window.

Here's a photo I made as we flew over a rocky, icy piece of Mother Earth: Greenland

What I saw was rock and ice, which pretty much describes Greenland. With 56, 200 inhabitants, this huge island was "discovered" by Norwegians in the 10th century (though the Inuit already living there probably felt no need tot be discovered) and was later a Danish colony.

Now it is an autonomous (self-governing) part if the Kingdom of Denmark. The US has a presence in an airbase in Thule. As the ice sheets on the island retreat due to global climate change, Greenland will become strategically important in trade and politics. Look at its position on the map of North Pole:
